Gif Tutorial - Gifs From Videos

Okay so here’s the gif tutorial some anon asked for! Sorry if you can’t see some of the pictures, I know they’re pretty small. Also, I have a netbook, so some things on Photoshop are cut out or squished or whatever.
So the version of photoshop I used is Photoshop CS5. This tutorial is going to show you how to make gifs from videos. Not screencaps.

First, you have to download a video. I use this website to download videos.

Then, you have to import the video into photoshop. You do this by going to File > Import > Video Frames to Layers

Next, you find the video you want to use. In this case, I’m using a clip I downloaded from The Notebook. Once you do that, you have to click “Selected Range Only” and limit to every THREE frames. Also click “Make Frame Animation”

Then, you choose the section of the video you want to make the gif from. You have to hold down the alt key and drag the little thingy along the section you want to gif. The section you selected should be a darker grey. Click Ok after you have the area selected.

After you click Ok, go to Window > Animation and make sure it has a checkmark beside it. If you don’t click it, the Animation frames won’t come up and you won’t be able to make a gif lol.

Okay next, you’ll see a bunch of frames that look like all your layers. Select all the frames, and click the little arrow thingy on the bottom of one of them. Then change the frame time to something slower than the default number. I usually use 0.17, 0.18, or 0.19 seconds. This sets the frame delay and determines how fast or slow your gif will move. Also, underneath the first frame, make sure the loop is set to Forever. Not once or 3 times.

Next, you’ll have to resize your image to whatever size you’re making it. I’m making this actual gif’s width 300px, but for a regular gif I would post, I would make the width 500px. Go to Image > Image Size to change the image size.

So at this step, you’re basically done with your gif. You can delete unnecessary frames, add colourings and effects (which I did for this, but I won’t get into that because that would take too much time…basically I did curves & used a gradient map) and yeah. So when you’re satisfied with your gif, go to File > Save for Web and Devices

Then, you’re have the option to take out colours, add colours, etc. Note that you want to keep your gif size UNDER 500KB, or else it won’t work on tumblr. You’ll probably want to stick to around 64-128 colours to stay under 1000KB, or else greatly reduce the number of frames you have in the gif. Make sure you have GIF selected. I use Perceptual and Pattern most of the time for my gifs too, because those options takes up the least amount of KB’s haha.

So after you’re done this and you’re sure your gif is under 1000KB, click save, and you’re done! This is what mine turned out to be like: (remember I said I made the image smaller than I normally would)

The end! I hope this helped, I’m super shitty at explaining things, but I did my best. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask me!
